Thought leader interview with Daniel Burton

Daniel Burton, Founder of Wondrwall
Daniel Burton, Founder of Wondrwall

What will be the biggest issue you hope to hear more on at Housing 2022?

I feel affordability and the cost of living is currently so prevalent in the media that it will need to be thoroughly addressed throughout the conference. However, we also can’t lose momentum in the areas of sustainability and decarbonisation to hit our net zero targets. Solutions that have the potential to address all these issues simultaneously will need to be championed at Housing 2022.

What will you be speaking about in your session?

I will give an overview on where we perceive the housing industry to be on their journey towards 2025. I can also give evidence of the work the Wondrwall Group are carrying out to help housebuilders meet their Future Homes Standard requirements now. I can demonstrate how our partners are completely surpassing the 30% CO2 reduction required this year. I will also draw upon my personal experiences of collaborating and working in partnership with housebuilders to achieve our common goals and the need to not forget the retrofit challenge as a significant element in achieving our environmental and sustainability targets.

Tell us a question for the Secretary of State?

How do you see the energy systems of the UK evolving over the next 10 years and what will housing’s role be within them?

What are you most looking forward to?

There has been a shift in the industry and there is an appreciation now that the time for talking is over. It will be great to to catch up with old and new contacts to learn more about the actions they are taking in preparation for 2025 and ultimately 2050.

Name the housing speaker of your dreams and why?

Housing will have to play an increasingly active role in the energy systems of the future. Demand side response and flexibility behind the meter will become vital to meet the demands of increased electrification for transport and domestic heating. Martin Cave, Chairman at Ofgem can speak very eloquently about this.

Why is it vital the whole sector has a place to meet each year?

The scale of the challenges facing the industry, both in terms of new build and retrofitting existing housing stock are so vast. It will only be through increased collaboration and shared innovation that we will succeed. By creating a forum for that to occur will be vital to drive us towards economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable housing.
